High Water Bill But No Visible Leak: What to Check
1 min read
Leaks are often invisible. These checks help you look in the right places first.
Invisible does not mean absent
Water can escape without leaving an obvious mark: an under-slab line, an irrigation valve, a toilet flapper that seals imperfectly, or a supply line running under a lawn.
The most useful single test is a whole-house one: turn off every fixture, then watch the meter. Movement with nothing running suggests water is leaving somewhere.
Rule out the billing side too
Before assuming a hidden leak, confirm the reading was actual rather than estimated, and that no rate or fee changed. A billing explanation and a plumbing explanation feel identical on the statement.
