Estimated vs Actual Water Meter Reading
1 min read
An estimate followed by a correction can look exactly like a spike in usage.
Why estimates happen
When a meter cannot be read, some utilities estimate the period from past usage. The next actual read then reconciles the difference, which can land as one unusually large bill.
How to spot it
Look for a reading code or the words estimated, actual or adjusted on the statement, and compare several periods rather than only two. A dip followed by a spike often points to an estimate and a correction rather than a real usage change.
