How to Read a Water Meter

1 min read

Reading your own meter turns the bill from a claim into something you can verify.

Find the meter and the units

Meters are usually in a covered box near the street, in a basement, or in a utility closet. Note the units: many U.S. meters record gallons, others record cubic feet, and bills are often billed per hundred cubic feet or per thousand gallons.

Take two readings

Record the number, wait a fixed interval with no water running, and record it again. A repeatable pair of readings is the foundation for every other check, including the leak indicator test.

Turn this into a process you can follow.

The BillWise guides organize every check into one step-by-step workflow.
